Hate Speech Set to Music Is Still Hate Speech

I feel a rant coming on

ts-fred_phelpsFred Phelps and the whack jobs at the Westboro Baptist Church are at it again. I swear these people are nuttier than squirrel poop. I really don’t get how they can call themselves Christians while living with such hate in their hearts.

As a man of God myself (I was ordained at the Universal Life Church online), I feel it is my duty to set brother Fred on the right path. I guess Fred is a slow reader because he doesn’t seem to have read the second half of the Bible yet. Brother Fred is still worshiping the vengeful God that destroyed the world with a flood, made Job’s life miserable on a bet with the Devil just to prove he could, and let Lott sleep with his young daughters after the fall of Sodom and Gomorrah. Lets face it, the God of the Old Testament was an asshole. If he were a celebrity he’d be Andy Dick.

Now he’s set his Dicky-ness to music.  (Be sure to stay to the end of the video, or skip ahead, for the touching ending.)

Fred really needs to hurry up and get to the New Testament. Jesus put a stop to all the bullshit that came before him–no more destroying the world because he could, no more bets with the Devil using people as poker chips, and much, much less incest. Jesus was love and forgiveness. Anyone could be saved if they believed and truly wanted to be forgiven. Brother Fred needs to finish the book before he starts preaching out of it.

Fred is a throw back to the old fire and brimstone preachers of old. The kind that used to just travel across America with their tents and scare the bejesus out of people, collect some money, and move on in the middle of the night to the next town. There are still plenty of preachers traveling and spreading the word this way, but most have evolved with time; they don’t preach hate and intolerance like it’s still the 1950s. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Westboro Baptist Church had a sign out front that read, “Colored Entrance in the Back.” Come to think of it, has anyone EVER seen a non-white member of the Westboro Baptist Church?

Fred and his church of hate have made a name for themselves by going to funerals of gay men and women to protest. By “protest,” I mean they yell at grieving family and friends that the person they just lost is burning in Hell. Fred has even arranged his service times so his followers can go protest at other churches in their area who allow gay people to worship. That’s right, they even protest other churches. After 9-11, they found a new group of mourners to spread their hate to– families of fallen American soldiers.

To Fred and his followers, the bodies of the men and women who died in the service of our country are proof of God’s hatred of us. These people take pleasure in inflicting emotional torment on the families and friends of the dead. I don’t care how they justify it to themselves, what they do is wrong and there is nothing Christian about it.

Thankfully, there’s a group who have stepped up to stand against Fred and his followers. Enter the Patriot Guard Riders.

The Patriot Guard Riders hold the line against Fred Phelps and his church. The Patriot Guard attends funerals as invited guest of the grieving families. They formed originally as a response to the protest of the Westboro Baptist Church in their area. The Patriot Guard is more than 50,000 strong and comprised of members from all walks of life. Many of the Guard are former military personnel, but serving in the military isn’t a requirement, and neither is riding a motorcycle. Anyone can join and show their support of our fallen soldiers. Many of the families the Patriot Guard has come out to support have gone on to join them. It’s not just at soldiers’ funerals–I’ve read about them showing up at the funerals of gay people to do the same thing. As you can guess, this doesn’t sit will with Fred and his church.

Shirley L. Phelps-Roper, Fred’s daughter, has called the Patriot Guard “bitter bikers.”

“Everything they try to do to try and shut us up and get us to go away draws attention to us. Everyone who sees them thinks of us because they know why they are there.”

It seems the rotten apple didn’t fall far from the tree. With as much hate and misery as Fred Phelps and Westboro Baptist Church inflict, it’s beyond me how someone hasn’t shot Fred and burned down the church.

Nothing would make me happier than if it turned out Fred pulled a Ted Haggard. By “pulled” I mean sucked a huge throbbing hunk of man meat. No one can be that anti-gay without something buried deep in the closet.

Brother Fred and every adult member of the Westboro Baptist Church, I have an award for you.

I’ll leave you with one last thing. How is this NOT child abuse?

  4. Why doesn’t child services step in and take these kids away from their parents? There is a case up here in British Columbia where some children were taken away from their parents who are white supremacists. The children showed up to school with racist slogans and images drawn on their bodies and that’s when children services was called to take the kids away.

  5. Um, no. There are no non-white people in this “church.” Or non-crazy people, for that matter. It’s really only about 15-30 people. Almost all of whom are related to one another.
