Sad News from the Bovine World

16 Cows struck dead by lightning

ts-deadcowsIn East Lothian, Scotland yeterday, lightning struck and killed 16 cows which were taking shelter from a storm.  Sources report that lightning struck one cow, and the other 15 cows were killed by the electricity conducted through the puddle.  Sad.

Beef farmer 60 year old Jim McDougal had this to say:

“It is a shocking thing to see. I felt numbness, it was unbelievable. “They were all either sitting or lying where they had fallen in a regimented row. I have never seen anything like it in my life. “The cows were singed and we could smell it in the air when we arrived. “I am very upset, but it was a freak act of nature so there was nothing I could do about it.”

His wife Elizabeth said:

“Jim could not believe the carnage he saw. A man down the road saw a cow being struck by lightning and then the vet thinks it conducted the lightning to the other cows as they were standing in the same puddle under a tree.”

  1. Does this mean I get a price break on jerkey?

  2. So instead of having their throats slit in a slaughterhouse, they got electrocuted? Potato-pohtahto. More like sad news for the beef farmer who now doesn’t get paid, since the cows had a death sentence anyway.

  3. Yeah, I gotta go w/Chelsea’s read on this one. I don’t think he’s mourning the cow’s unfortunate demise. On the bright side, it was probably a quick death and they were out wandering in a field, so at least they were allowed to walk around, not penned in a tiny cage to keep their muscles undeveloped and “tender.”

I swear, I’d be vegetarian if I only had the willpower. The spirit is willing but the flesh is too delicious.
