Susan Boyle Gets A Makeover

Well, DUH!

ts-susanboyleSusan Boyle, the Scottish sensation, whose performance of “I Dreamed A Dream” from the musical Les Misérables wowed the pants off of Simon Cowell and the other judges at the auditions for Britain’s Got Talent, the British version of American Idol, is succumbing to the trapping of celebrity and fame; she got a makeover.

Since her jaw-dropping audition less than two weeks ago, Susan Boyle has become an international phenomenon.   The original version of the song has shot up the iTunes charts, and the YouTube videos of the audition have a total of nearly 65 million views.  And, it is rumored that Simon Cowell has already signed her to Sony BMG.  Big things for Ms. Boyle.

But considering the judges and audience laughed at the seemingly frumpy and bushy haired Boyle, the question hung thick in the air: What to do about those eyebrows and her, er, non-superstar look? The answer, said Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden, was nothing:

“[Boyle] needs to stay exactly as she is because that’s the reason we love her.”

“The minute we turn her into a glamour-puss is when it’s spoiled.”

Well… that lasted all of 5 days.

Ms. Boyle done went out and got her hair and eyebrows did.  Gone are the puffy brows of last week and in are perfectly coiffed arches.  It is rumored that she has also dyed her hair auburn.

Yep, auburn bangs!

Bushy brows!

Perfectly arched brows!

Whelp, there you have it.  Pretty soon, Rachel Zoe will get her sinewy clutches on Ms. Boyle, and after a few months on the “Hollywood diet,” Boyle will emerge underweight and glassy eyed–like Zoe’s other clients: Cameron Diaz, Mischa Barton, Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, and Keira Knightley.

Methamphetamines.  Works like a charm.

  1. “[Boyle] needs to stay exactly as she is because that’s the reason we love her.”

So, Amanda, you don’t love her for being pretty. You love her for being ugly. And this makes you a saint? If she stops being ugly you won’t love her anymore? How is that any less shallow??

You can’t just make her your big icon of “Ugly People We Love” – that’s using her just as much. Let the woman have a makeover if she wants one.

  2. Totally agree, as per usual, bfm.

Let the poor woman make a few minor tweezes- er, tweaks to her look. If it helps HER feel more confident, there’s nothing wrong with it. As long as she doesn’t start Kidmanning the character out of her face, it’s all good.

  4. If I were her, and read the comments that started spilling out about my appearance, I would have made modifications too…and I’m not one that easily succumbs to peer pressure. But seriously, who wants to be the laughing stock of the internets?

  5. Nobody wants to hit Rivers status. I’m sad we had to put Nicoles face in that category. But she looks like a melted Barbie. Save your sould Susan. And what’s left of your face.

  9. I saw an update today with the newly dyed hair. And what I love is that she basically went out and got herself a 50 dollar dye job.

In LA, that’s like Supercuts level! And she went out, or so it seemed, on her own. No super stylist, no televised make-over. She also got a smart looking suit with a jacket that was very “What Not to Wear” flattering.

I think she looks great. I’m a big believer in the what-not-to-wear philosophy (the American version anyway) that tells you to love the body you have NOW, and how liking the way you look can make you feel better in general. Acceptance doesn’t mean staying frumpy. It just means you’re okay enough with your body to show it off in stylish new clothes 😛

  11. WIN for SeaKat! (and VF)

What Not to Wear is probably one of my favorite shows on television. I find myself watching the reruns all the time. I love it when they have an especially difficult client and Stacy and Clinton both get all “Bish Plz” and put her in her place. And I have taken what I learned watching the show to incorporate into my own wardrobe.
