O Mai

She’s a uniter, not a divider

bettybrownLast week Republican Texas State Representative Betty Brown (The name Betty White was taken) caused a shit storm during House testimony on a voter ID bill. When asked to address issues concerning the potential challenges faced by Chinese-Americans under the proposed bill, Brown replied:

“Rather than everyone here having to learn Chinese—I understand it’s a rather difficult language—do you think that it would behoove you and your citizens to adopt a name that we could deal with more readily here?”

Thus bringing about a new age for the term “you people” and debuting “you citizens” as its shiny new, modern counterpart.

Apparently concerned that people didn’t fully grasp the magnitude of her ignorance, Brown continued, telling Organization of Chinese Americans representative Ramey Ko (Pronounced “Koh,” for those of you currently bewildered by the complexity of the name):

“Can’t you see that this is something that would make it a lot easier for you and the people who are poll workers if you could adopt a name just for identification purposes that’s easier for Americans to deal with?”

Brown was initially unapologetic, but after the races of the world united and rose up against her, she finally relented and issued an apology–or at least, finger pointing half-heartedly disguised as an apology. While she was busy issuing a prepared statement recognizing the contributions of the Asian-American community in Texas, her rep, Jordan Berry was flapping his gums at the press, telling them “Brown’s comment is being used by the bill’s opponents to obscure the real issues involved.”  The real issues involved assumably being that she’s a xenophobic twat. It makes no sense for her opponents to try to obscure that fact, but rest assured, “you citizens.” She will not allow her racism to deter her racism!

  1. OH no she diint. Oh, she’s in Texas. Of COURSE she did.

My husband used to travel to W. Texas regularly for work. He was staying in the town’s only motel and asked the proprietor where he could go to get a good meal. The answer?

“Well, you could go to (insert name), but the owners aren’t Americuns [sic]”

Of course, when he went to THAT restaurant, he was served by a lovely Asian-American person whose only accent was a Texas drawl. Pretty sure she actually WAS “American” only maybe not “white.” He was most upset by the casual way that the motel owner said that to him — like OF COURSE he would care about that. Look, I’m SURE there are racists in Seattle, but at least they know to shut the F up about it or risk total social ostracism.

Oh, also. Dated a Chinese-American guy (so hot!) in college. He grew up in Texas. He was once taunted by a schoolmate: “Why don’t all you Chinese go back to Korea where you came from?” As he said to me: “I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.”

  3. Thanks, bfm! I think the law of statistics suggest that when you commment like Chicagoans vote (early and often) you’re bound to hit one or two good ones. 🙂

Note to Texas secessionists: Buh. Bye.

Don’t let the door hit your Wrangler-clad ass on the way out.

Everything is biggest in Texas. Notably: Assholes, execution rates, hair and the ability to supply the nation with horrible presidents.

Oh, also, feel free to leave Austin behind when you go. It’s my understanding that Austin isn’t really “Texas” anyways. (That’s a compliment.)

  4. I think we should help out Ms. Betty Brown. We should ALL take easy to pronounce last names.

    Brown, Smith, and Jones.

And while we are at it, let’s limit the first names too. Let’s all pick a first name that is short, nongender specific: I’m thinking Pat or Chris.

There. Done. It’s all simple now.

    You’re welcome Ms. Betty Brown.

(I guess I must be a little fired up this morning.)

  6. SeaKat…West Texas doesn’t count, we send all the loonies out there. And, Austin IS Texas, just weird; and by weird, I mean more than average amount of drunken and/or stoned college students can be seen every night of the week.

Texas gets an unfair shake, in the media especially. Most of us are not uneducated hill-billy hicks (although, I can’t say anything about “Wrangler-clad asses,” because my little boy wears them, and I think he looks adorable…anyway). And honestly, compared to the places I have traveled, people in Texas are generally MUCH nicer and more friendly than anywhere else I’ve ever been.

Aside from visiting W. Texas (which, my GOD who would choose to do that anyway – I’ve lived here 28 years and managed to avoid doing anything but flying over.), I’m willing to bet we have no more racists than anywhere else; it’s just that, as you mention, everything is bigger in Texas…including mouths.

As for our politicians…well – I hate all politicians; the majority of them are idiots…Texas, and elsewhere. And I think they are all equal idiots, just about different issues.

That’s as far as I’m taking this conversation. Should Texas leave the US (which would NEVER happen), you’re all saying buh-bye to me, too. 😦

  7. George Foreman just brought up a good point regarding my suggestion.

No, not the father George, creator of the George Foreman grill. I mean the son, George Foreman.

No, not that son, the other son, the third born.

He suggested everyone should do different spellings of the same name so as to differentiate people.

Ms. Betty Brown, you are giving me a headache.

  9. AdAd, don’t take it personally. If Virginia, or California, or Michigan started talking about seceding, everyone would be finding something to pick on each of them for. Heck, there actually has been talk that Northern Virginia wanted to break free from the rest of Virginia – and every time it comes up, the name calling is not far behind.

I personally love Texas (well, except for El Paso), and would hate to see it go. But if this crazy talk continues, I’m going to have to start mocking it more.

  10. You know, I stumbled upon the website created by sucessionist the other day, looking for the websites about the tea parties. Seriously, it was a joke. Comments and posts used words like “gubment” – I was disgusted.

There is ONE group down here causing a HUGE ruckus about seceding. I don’t even think it has that many people, they are just loud as hell. The radio hosts have been interviewing these people (for ratings) lately, and no one agrees with them. I think they just like to flaunt that we have the ability to, and no one else can. psh, whateva.

I hate to tell them what our, currently non-existant, state taxes would do should we secede – you know, since they want to leave because of that…

  12. AdAd: Most southern and midwestern states have to deal with that, I think. I currently live in TN and cringe every time an idiot does or says something newsworthy because I know it’s only going to perpetuate the stereotype, but I’ve lived in and visited many places and have yet to find a place where ignorance and idiocy doesn’t exist. I don’t think Betty Brown’s a racist twat because she’s a Texan. I think she’s a racist twat because she’s ignorant, and that’s, as I’ve said, definitely not Texas specific.

  13. A LOT of nice people are from Texas.

    Lyle Lovett is from Texas.

He sang one of my favorite songs. It goes a little something like this: (lights dimming, music beginning)

“That’s right you’re not from Texas,
    But Texas wants you anyway.”

    Thank you, thankyouverymuch!

  16. AdAd, I owe you an apology. I was painting with a broad brush.

I certainly *don’t* think everyone in Texas is racist. I guess my impression, which I realize is based on less-than-stellar evidence, is that Texas *seemed* to have more racists that felt comfortable espousing those views with little fear of backlash.

But you know what? I am guilty of being a locationist — judging a place where I have never lived, based solely on flimsy anecdotal evidence and media-spun information. That’s not much better now is it?

::hangs head, kicks at dirt in embarassed fashion::

I *am* very sorry if I hurt your feelings or offended you. If Texas does secede, I’ll infiltrate the border and smuggle you out, OK? 🙂

    Comment by SeaKat | April 16, 2009 | Reply

  17. SeaKat, no apologies necessary – your right with your impression that there seem to be more, and more vocal, racists down here – but I think that has more to do with the media publicizing it that way, than any actuality.

If some redneck down here puts up a dummy hanging from a tree, the media doesn’t scold them. It’s more like “hahaha, look at those dumb rednecks down there in Texas” – so you’re probably correct in your perception that there is less backlash. I don’t think the people down here accept it any more than they do anywhere else; but when you get “attention” on national television for being an idiot, I don’t think it works well as a deterrent.

I don’t know how it’s being shown around the rest of the country, but these idiot talking about secession shouldn’t be given the time of day. They’re a bunch of crazies, making a lot of noise on no foundation – and no one DOWN HERE is taking them seriously.

That being said, should Texas secede, I plan on taking this bitch over – maybe all of you can just move down and we’ll run it how we see fit, and change the name to Bale.

  25. Im currently in San Antonio and the riverwalk is beautiful, but I’m not terribly impressed with the “gubment” around here. Mainly I think its because we’re in the middle of this all this succession talk and what with the teabagging running amok around these parts, its enough to make you yell “Fuck the Alamo!” in a crowded market. Of course, that would get me killed, but I’m sure everyone understands the frustration.

All in all, I think San Antonio is pretty nice, I could live here, but I just don’t understand what all the boasting is about. All the commercials are especially geared for Texas “Your friendly Texas Wal-Mart” or “Your Texan sized truck” (barf). Everything is Texas, Texas, Texas. It just sounds like they are compensating for something; Like a man who drives a ridiculously big truck.
